Granite — patio outdoor

5/5 suitability

Granite pavers are exceptionally durable, weather-resistant, and can withstand heavy foot traffic and harsh outdoor conditions. Its resistance to scratching, fading, and staining makes it an ideal choice for outdoor patios.

Considerations

Polished granite is too slippery for outdoor use. Darker granite colors can absorb and retain significant heat in direct sunlight, making the surface hot to walk on. It can also be a more expensive option compared to other paving materials.

Specifications

  • Finish: Flamed, Bush-hammered, or Sandblasted finishes are highly recommended for outdoor patios to ensure superior slip resistance and a natural, rugged aesthetic.
  • Thickness: 1.25 inches (approx. 3 cm) for pavers is generally recommended for outdoor patios to ensure durability and stability under foot traffic and environmental exposure.
  • ASTM: ASTM C615/C615M (Standard Specification for Granite Dimension Stone). Freeze-thaw resistance (e.g., ASTM C666/C666M) and water absorption (ASTM C97/C97M) are critical for outdoor applications. DCOF testing is essential.
  • Maintenance: Low to Medium (requires regular cleaning to remove debris. Sealing is generally not critical but can be applied for added stain protection, especially for lighter varieties).
  • Installed: $40-$120/sq ft (material and installation costs vary based on granite type, finish, paver size, and complexity of the installation).
