Natural stone flooring for commercial spaces — lobbies, hotels, retail, and hospitality.
Commercial stone flooring must handle thousands of foot traffic cycles daily, meet ADA slip requirements, and look impeccable for years. Granite and quartzite lead for durability; marble and limestone for prestige hospitality applications.
What the application demands
| Slip rating | COF ≥ 0.42 wet (ADA); ≥ 0.60 recommended |
| Abrasion resistance | ASTM C241 — Class I (granite) or Class II |
| Flatness | 1/8" in 10 ft (ANSI 108.02) for no lippage |
| Grout | Epoxy grout for high-traffic commercial joints |
| Maintenance plan | Crystallization or diamond polishing schedule required for marble |
Recommended stones
Granite
Highest abrasion resistance. The default commercial flooring stone. Polished or honed.
Quartzite
Maximum hardness (Mohs 7). Excellent for retail entries and hotel lobbies. Dramatic veining.

How to Specify Natural Stone for Commercial Flooring
Specification guide for designers and contractors selecting stone for commercial interiors.
Define traffic class and performance requirements
Assess foot traffic volume (light < 100 people/day; medium 100–500; heavy 500+). For heavy traffic, specify granite or quartzite with ASTM C241 abrasion resistance data. For medium traffic, marble or limestone are acceptable with a maintenance program in place.
Select stone and verify ASTM compliance
Request ASTM test reports: C170 (compressive strength), C241 (abrasion resistance), C880 (flexural strength), and C97 (absorption). For slip safety, request COF data per ASTM C1028. Specify minimum values in the project specification.
Specify installation standards
Reference ANSI A108 for thin-set installation. Require 95% mortar coverage on all tiles. Specify maximum 1/8" lippage in any 10-ft direction. For large-format tiles (>15" on any side), specify large-and-heavy-tile (LHT) thinset mortar.
Detail transitions and expansion joints
Place expansion joints at columns, at doorways, and every 20–25 ft in large floor areas. Use metal T-moldings or Schluter profiles at material transitions. Expansion joints must go through the full mortar bed, not just the tile surface.
Establish a maintenance program
Before project closeout, provide the owner with a written maintenance specification: daily care procedures, approved cleaners, crystallization/polishing schedule, and resealing intervals. For marble, include contact information for a stone restoration contractor for future polishing cycles.
