Product Recommendations
wet-look. These are solvent-based and can be used as pre-sealers.
- Impregnating (Penetrating) Sealers: These are generally recommended for most applications. They absorb into the stone and protect from within without changing the stone's appearance. Fluoropolymer-based impregnating sealers are often best for kitchen countertops, while silicone-based sealers work well for general floor applications. Examples include Aqua-X Stone Sealer (Black Diamond Coatings) and Aqua Mix Sealer’s Choice Gold.
- Topical Sealers: These coat the surface, adding sheen but can also create a film that may yellow, peel, and become slippery. They are generally only appropriate for specific decorative applications.
- Enhancing Sealers: Products like Miracle Sealants Seal & Enhance are designed to highlight and accentuate the stone’s natural color, giving a
Frequency by Stone Type
Sealing frequency depends on the stone's porosity, finish, usage, and location.
- Highly Porous Stones (Marble, Limestone, Travertine, Onyx): Every 6-12 months, or as frequently as every 6 months for high-use areas like bathrooms and kitchens. Travertine, being very porous, often needs sealing for both indoor and outdoor use.
- Less Porous Stones (Granite, Quartzite, Slate): Every 12-24 months. Some dense granites (e.g., Absolute Black) may not require sealing at all. Always perform a water test to determine necessity.
- Outdoor Surfaces: At least once per year due to exposure to UV rays, rain, and dirt.
Step-by-Step Process
1. Preparation: Ensure the surface is dry, clean, and free of waxes, sealers, or finishes. New installations should dry for at least 24 hours. Protect surrounding surfaces. Always test the product in an inconspicuous area first.
Tips
- Always perform a water drop test: If water beads up, the seal is intact. If it absorbs within 5 minutes, it's time to reseal.
- For best results, apply sealer before any work is done with the tiles (pre-sealing) to prevent staining during installation.
- Avoid using acidic cleaners on sealed stone, as they can strip away the sealer.
- Wipe up spills promptly to maintain the sealer's integrity.
- Regularly inspect sealed surfaces for dull spots or changes in water repellency.
