Freeze-Thaw Ratings for Natural Stone
Which stones survive outdoor winters in North America
Overview
How to read freeze-thaw performance for exterior natural stone — water absorption, ASTM C1026, and regional climate zones.
How-to steps
Step-by-step
- 1. Water absorption
Stones under 0.5% absorption (granite, quartzite) perform best in freeze-thaw cycles. Above 1% requires sealing and limits exterior use in cold climates.
- 2. ASTM testing
ASTM C1026 freeze-thaw testing cycles stone through 300 freeze-thaw cycles. Specify tested stone for exterior work in USDA zones 1–6.
- 3. Regional selection
Northern US and Canada: granite, quartzite, dense slate. Sun Belt: travertine, limestone, marble with proper sealing.
