What are the guidelines for applying a scratch coat for natural stone veneer?
The surface must be clean and free of debris, and Type-S mortar should be used. It's important not to leave the scratch-coat surface smooth; groove it horizontally with a notched trowel or mason's 'comb'. Scratch-coating can be done entirely beforehand or 'scratch-as-you-go'.
